Mumbai! Sprawling city with a thousand faces but also – and above all – a thousand flavors!
Indian street food is surprising and really varied, one’s just need to be audacious enough to try, because it is not always easy to understand what the stand offers and what are the dishes! It’s amazing how in such a tiny place, so many varieties of meal can be made!
Beyond preconceived ideas, street food is not necessarily too spicy and sensitive palates can also find something to treat their taste buds, just ask nicely and with the smile “no spicy please”! And in general we are left with something slightly spicy!
Happiness caused our gourmet belly to end up in a neighborhood in the center of a small market where several street food stands were ready to fill us up. We had a well-established routine and our little favorites. We started the day with coconut water and its fresh and healthy pulpit, nothing better to prepare the stomach to receive the rest of the festivities. Then came the Dosa, a kind of pancake made from lentil flour or chickpeas, stuffed with various curry vegetables or other preparation, or along with a dish in sauce. Dosa’s booth was well established and many people was waiting in line at lunchtime. Beautiful proof of quality. Then as a dessert, nothing more greedy, sweet and healthy that a sugar cane juice served a few steps away. Finally, with the night falling, a new stand was set up at the small crossroads with its Ragda Patties, a dish delight mixing a variety of flavors, as each spoon revealed different tastes. Fried potato cakes in a sauce with chickpea curry, raw onions and tomatoes, fresh coriander and green mango. All complemented with sweet and sour chutney, and mixed with divine spices, topped with small chips to give a little crunch to this treat!
